Every year, New Jersey’s state parks celebrate the New Year with First Day Hikes. To welcome 2017, the New Jersey State Park Service is hosting 19 guided hikes, 1 mountain bike ride and 1 horseback ride in state parks, forests and historic sites on New Year’s Day. Stephanie Fox, Resource Interpretive Specialist for the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, sat down with Bob Bostock to discuss how people can start the new year off right by getting outside in New Jersey’s beautiful outdoors.

For the past 6 years, DEP has participated in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program as a part of Governor Christie’s annual Season of Service Campaign. This year’s Angel Tree Drop Off took place on December 13. More than 1,000 gifts were delivered for 231 children this year alone. Richard Pease, Envoy at the Salvation Army Trenton Citadel Corps, joined Bob Bostock to discuss the Angel Tree Program and the difference that the Salvation Army makes both locally and worldwide.

With more than 45% of New Jersey covered in forests, forest management is an important part of DEP’s mission. DEP’s forestry team maintains and protects New Jersey’s forest landscape through various methods and means, such as prescribed burning and through the Natural Resource Stewardship Plan. Bernie Isaacson, assistant regional forester, joined Bob Bostock to discuss New Jersey’s abundant state forests and the sustainability initiatives that are in place to ensure that our forests thrive.

Every year, thousands of people gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s daring Christmas Night river crossing. This event has become a tradition for Washington Crossing State Park, and hundreds of reenactors come together to make this an event that is fun and informative for people of all ages. Mark Sirak and Clay Craighead, Resource Interpretive Specialists at Washington Crossing State Park, joined Bob Bostock to discuss this historic crossing and the reenactment which takes place on Christmas Day at the Park.

Since July, much of New Jersey has been under a drought watch. In the months since, rainfall has continued to be scarce in much of the state. As a result, 14 counties are now under a drought warning. With reservoir levels dropping and precipitation continuing to be below normal levels, water conservation becomes ever more important. Dan Kennedy, assistant commissioner of Water Resources Management, joined Bob Bostock to provide an update on the drought situation in New Jersey as well as some tips on water conservation, because Every Drop Counts.
